Metropolitan Athletic Club
Catarinense club based in Blumenau, founded in 1997 from the restructuring of professional football in the city. Known as Verdão do Vale, it competed in the Campeonato Catarinense and national access competitions.
History
Metropolitan Athletic Club was founded in 1997 in Blumenau, in the Itajaí Valley, in Santa Catarina, at a time when the city sought to restore professional football to prominence after the decline of traditional local clubs. The club adopted green and white colors and became known as Verdão do Vale by supporters. In the years following its founding, it progressively climbed the divisions of Santa Catarina football until reaching the elite of the Campeonato Catarinense. In the top division of the state championship, Metropolitano faced Santa Catarina's biggest clubs — Avaí, Figueirense, Criciúma, Chapecoense and Joinville — and maintained regular participation throughout the 2000s and 2010s. The club also competed in national competitions, such as Série D of the Campeonato Brasileiro and the Copa do Brasil, taking Blumenau's name to matches outside the state. Its home matches were played at Estádio Doutor Hercílio Luz, a traditional venue in Blumenau, which hosted the city's major football matches.
