History

Founded in 1978 by the mining company Codelco (Corporación Nacional del Cobre de Chile), Cobresal was born with the objective of representing workers from the El Salvador mine in Chilean professional football. It quickly established itself in the Chilean Primera División. The club surprised the country by being the Chilean runner-up champion in 1985 and becoming the champion of the Copa Chile in 2015 and 2016, a historic achievement for a team from a small city isolated in the Atacama desert. To this day, Cobresal is recognized for the peculiarity of being maintained by a state-owned mining company, regularly competing in the first division of Chilean football.
