Corinthians 1914
Squad of Sport Club Corinthians Paulista that won the 1914 São Paulo Championship, the first official title in the club's history, just four years after its foundation by workers from the Bom Retiro neighborhood.
History
Corinthians was founded on September 1st, 1910 by a group of workers from Bom Retiro, in São Paulo, inspired by the visit of the English team Corinthian Football Club to Brazil. In its early years, the club competed in lower divisions of São Paulo football, then dominated by associations linked to the city's elites. In 1913, Corinthians was admitted to the first division organized by APEA (São Paulo Athletic Sports Association). The following year, 1914, the team won the São Paulo Championship, its first official title, a result that established the club as a force in São Paulo football and strengthened its connection with the popular audience. That generation had as its main figures Neco, the greatest symbol of the club in that period and one of the greatest scorers in its history, and Amílcar Barbuy, who also played for the Brazilian National Team. The 1914 title opened the way for new São Paulo conquests in the following decade, when Corinthians formed championship teams in succession. The 1914 conquest is a historical milestone for the club because it marked the definitive entry of a team of working-class origin into the list of state champions, in a sporting environment that had previously been restricted to clubs of aristocratic foundation.
