Corinthians 1982-1983 (Corinthian Democracy)
Corinthians squad that won back-to-back São Paulo State Championships in 1982 and 1983, known for the Corinthian Democracy movement, which brought football decisions to collective voting among players and board members.
History
In the early 1980s, Corinthians experienced one of the most unique periods in Brazilian football. Under the management of football director Adilson Monteiro Alves, players and coaching staff began to make collective decisions on matters such as signings, team concentration and squad routine, in a movement that became known as Corinthian Democracy. Sócrates, Wladimir and Casagrande were the main leaders of the group, which used the club as a space for political debate during the end of military rule. In 1982, the team displayed the message "Vote on the 15th" on their shirts, in reference to that year's elections. On the field, the results were positive: Corinthians won the 1982 São Paulo State Championship and repeated the title in 1983, in both occasions against São Paulo. The period is remembered as a landmark in the relationship between football and political participation in Brazil.
