Corinthians 1988
The 1988 Corinthians team was champion of the Paulista Championship, a title that ended a five-year wait by the club for a state conquest, following the titles of 1982 and 1983 from the Corinthian Democracy.
History
Sport Club Corinthians Paulista, founded in 1910 by workers from the Bom Retiro neighborhood, entered the 1980s marked by the Corinthian Democracy movement, which led the club to the Paulista Championship titles of 1982 and 1983 with Sócrates, Casagrande, Wladimir and Zenon. After 1983, the club went five seasons without winning the Paulista Championship, a competition of enormous importance to the fans, who already lived with a 23-year drought without a state title that ended in 1977. In 1988, the team became state champion again. The 1988 title put Corinthians back into the title race and paved the way for the next phase, which would bring the first Brazilian Championship in 1990.
