Corinthians 1999-2000

Corinthians in 1999 and 2000 experienced one of the most victorious periods in the club's history, with back-to-back Brazilian Championship titles in 1998 and 1999 and the title of the first FIFA Club World Cup, in January 2000, at the Maracanã.

History

Between 1998 and 2000, Corinthians assembled a strong squad, with goalkeeper Dida, midfielder Marcelinho Carioca, midfielder Vampeta, Colombian Freddy Rincón, and strikers Edílson and Luizão. During this cycle, the club won the Brazilian Championship in 1998 and 1999 and the São Paulo State Championship in 1999. In January 2000, Corinthians competed in the first FIFA Club World Cup, held in Brazil. In the group stage, the team defeated Al Nassr 2-0, drew with Real Madrid 2-2, and thrashed Raja Casablanca 4-0, advancing to the final as group leaders. The final was played on January 14, 2000, at the Maracanã, against Vasco da Gama. After a goalless draw, Corinthians won the penalty shootout 4-3 and conquered the unprecedented world title. The tournament was the first in history organized by FIFA with continental club champions. The period established Corinthians as one of the great forces in Brazilian football in the late 1990s and served as the foundation for the trajectory that would lead the club to new titles in the following years.
