Corinthians 2012

The 2012 Corinthians, managed by Tite, won the club's first Copa Libertadores in history, unbeaten, and claimed the second world championship by defeating Chelsea in Japan. It was one of the most defensively solid teams in Brazilian football of that period.

History

In 2012, under the command of coach Tite, Corinthians won the Copa Libertadores de América for the first time, the only major continental trophy missing from the club's collection. The campaign was unbeaten, and the team eliminated Neymar's Santos in the semifinal before facing Boca Juniors in the final. The final was played in two matches: a 1-1 draw at the Bombonera in Buenos Aires, and a 2-0 victory at the Pacaembu in São Paulo on July 4, 2012, with both goals scored by Emerson Sheik. Goalkeeper Cássio, defender Chicão, midfielder Paulinho, and Peruvian forward Paolo Guerrero were central pieces of the team. As South American champions, the club competed in the FIFA Club World Cup, held in Japan in December 2012. In the semifinal, they defeated Egypt's Al Ahly 1-0, with a goal by Guerrero. In the final, in Yokohama on December 16, they defeated Chelsea, then Champions League champions, also 1-0, with another goal by Guerrero. Cássio was named the tournament's best player. The 2012 world title was Corinthians' second, as they had already won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2000, held in Brazil. Tite's team became known for its tactical organization, strong marking, and efficiency in decisive matches. In 2013, the club still won the Recopa Sudamericana, closing the victorious cycle of that generation.
