Cruzeiro 1966
The Cruzeiro of 1966 was the celestial team that won the Brazil Cup, defeating Santos in the final and ending the rival's streak of five consecutive titles. The team brought together young talents such as Tostão and Dirceu Lopes.
History
Cruzeiro Esporte Clube was founded in 1921 in Belo Horizonte under the name Palestra Itália and adopted its current name in 1942. In the mid-1960s, the club became the center of Brazilian football with a generation largely formed by players developed in-house. In 1966, Cruzeiro won the Brazil Cup, the main national competition among state champions at the time. In the final against Santos, they won the first match 6-2 at Mineirão and the second 3-2 at Pacaembu. Santos had won the Brazil Cup from 1961 to 1965, and Cruzeiro's title ended that streak. In 2010, the CBF recognized the winners of the Brazil Cup as Brazilian champions, and the 1966 title officially entered the club's history. From that squad came important names in Brazilian football, such as Tostão, who was a world champion in 1970, and Dirceu Lopes, who would become one of the greatest idols in Cruzeiro's history.
