Cruzeiro in 1976 was the team that won the Copa Libertadores de América and became the second Brazilian club champion of the tournament, after Santos. The decision against River Plate required an extra match, played in Santiago, Chile.

History

Cruzeiro was founded in 1921, in Belo Horizonte, with the name Palestra Itália, created by the Italian community of the city. The current name was adopted in 1942. The team gained national prominence in the second half of the 1960s, with the opening of Mineirão Stadium and the conquest of the 1966 Brazil Cup against Pelé's Santos. In 1976, the club reached the final of Copa Libertadores de América against River Plate. Each team won one of the two matches of the decision, and the title was decided in an extra match at the National Stadium of Santiago, won by Cruzeiro 3-2. The campaign was led by coach Zezé Moreira and featured names such as right-back Nelinho and midfielder Wilson Piazza. The 1976 title consolidated Cruzeiro as a continental force and opened the way for the club's subsequent achievements, including the 1997 Libertadores and the triple crown of 2003.
