Cruzeiro 1997
Cruzeiro 1997 was champion of the Copa Libertadores, the second continental title for the Minas Gerais club. The team, coached by Paulo Autuori, defeated Sporting Cristal, from Peru, in the final.
History
Cruzeiro was founded on January 2, 1921, in Belo Horizonte, as Palestra Italia, and adopted its current name in 1942. In 1976 it had won the first Copa Libertadores and returned to compete for the continental title in the 1997 season. Under the command of coach Paulo Autuori, the team featured goalkeeper Dida and striker Elivélton among its highlights and reached the final against Sporting Cristal, from Peru. The title came with a 1-0 victory at Mineirão, goal by Elivélton, and a 0-0 draw in Lima, securing the second Copa Libertadores in the club's history. As South American champion, Cruzeiro competed in the Intercontinental Cup in Tokyo in December 1997 and was defeated 2-0 by Borussia Dortmund, the European champion. The 1997 campaign remains one of the most memorable in the club's history.
