Cruzeiro Esporte Clube
Cruzeiro is one of the most traditional clubs in Brazilian football, founded in Belo Horizonte in 1921 by Italian immigrants. It is twice Copa Libertadores champion and one of the greatest winners of the Brazilian Cup.
History
The club was born on January 2, 1921 as Società Sportiva Palestra Italia, created by the Italian community of Belo Horizonte. In 1942, during World War II, it changed its name to Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, in reference to the Southern Cross. National consolidation came with the 1966 Brasil Cup, when Cruzeiro defeated Pelé's Santos in the final, and with the inauguration of Mineirão Stadium in 1965. In the 1970s, the team won its first Copa Libertadores in 1976, with a victory over River Plate in a playoff match. In the 1990s, the club experienced a new victorious phase, with the Supercopa Libertadores in 1991 and 1992, the Brazilian Cup in 1993 and 1996, and the Copa Libertadores double in 1997. In 2003, Cruzeiro achieved the treble, winning the Mineiro Championship, Brazilian Cup, and Brazilian Championship. In the 2010s, the team won back-to-back Brazilian Championships in 2013 and 2014 and the Brazilian Cup in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, the club was relegated for the first time to Serie B and returned to the top flight after winning the second division title in 2022.
