History

Founded in 1944 in the city of Pereira, Deportivo Pereira is the most representative football club in the Risaralda department. For decades, Matecaña oscillated between Colombian football divisions, building a solid regional identity but without continental expression. The historic turnaround came in 2023, when Pereira surprised the South American continent by winning the South American Cup. With a compact squad, tactically organized and with a well-defined collective identity, the club eliminated major opponents throughout the tournament and defeated LDU Quito in the final played at the Centenário Stadium in Montevideo, becoming the first club from Risaralda to win an international title of relevance. The conquest of the South American Cup opened the doors to Deportivo Pereira's historic debut in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores de América, where the club represented Colombia and the coffee region with dignity. The 2023 title is considered one of the greatest achievements in Colombian football in recent history.
