FC Dnipro
FC Dnipro, from the Ukrainian city of Dnipro, was Soviet champion in 1983 and 1988 and runner-up in the Europa League 2014-15. The club faced a serious financial crisis starting in 2016.
History
Dnipro was founded in 1918 in the city then called Dnipropetrovsk. Throughout the Soviet period, the club established itself as one of the forces of Soviet football, being one of the few teams from outside Moscow and Kyiv to win the national championship. The highlight of this period were the Soviet First Division titles in 1983 and 1988, as well as the Soviet Cup in 1989. These results placed the club among the main teams of the former USSR and gave it access to European competitions. With Ukraine's independence, Dnipro began competing in the Ukrainian championship and remained among the top clubs, with frequent appearances in UEFA competitions. The Dnipro-Arena stadium was inaugurated in 2008. The greatest European achievement came in the 2014-15 season: the club eliminated opponents such as Olympiacos, Ajax, Club Brugge and Napoli and reached the Europa League final, losing to Sevilla 3-2 in Warsaw on May 27, 2015. Shortly after, a financial and administrative crisis led to the loss of the club's professional status.
