Doce Mel Football Club
Doce Mel Football Club was a football club from Bahia in the cocoa-growing region of Ilhéus, known for representing the interior of the state in national access competitions during the 1980s and 1990s.
History
Doce Mel Football Club emerged in Ilhéus, in southern Bahia, during a time of great economic prosperity linked to cocoa production in the region. The club's name made direct reference to this local economic vocation, and the team quickly became a sports reference for the population of Ilhéus and neighboring cities, such as Itabuna. The club's main moment of national prominence occurred at the end of the 1980s, when Doce Mel competed in the Brazilian Championship Series B, representing the interior of Bahia in a competition dominated by clubs from state capitals. Their participation brought visibility to southern Bahia's football, although the club did not manage to achieve promotion to the national elite. With the economic crisis that affected Bahia's cocoa farming in the following years, the club lost financial strength and gradually reduced its competitive activity, becoming today a name remembered mainly by historians of Bahian football and older supporters from the Ilhéus region.
