Esporte Clube Pau Grande
Esporte Clube Pau Grande is an amateur club from the Pau Grande district, in Magé, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is remembered as Garrincha's first club, where he had his first experience in an organized team at 14 years old.
History
Pau Grande is a district of Magé, in the metropolitan region of Rio de Janeiro, where Manuel Francisco dos Santos, Garrincha, was born on October 28, 1933. Local life revolved around the region's textile factory, and football was the main entertainment for residents. It was at Esporte Clube Pau Grande that Garrincha, at 14 years old, had his first experience in an organized team. The boy's crooked legs, which had a difference of about six centimeters between them, did not prevent him from standing out on the improvised fields and at the district club. From there, Garrincha joined Botafogo in 1953 and became one of the greatest dribblers in history, two-time World Champion with the Brazilian National Team in 1958 and 1962. The stadium of the Pau Grande club today bears the name Mané Garrincha, in tribute to the idol. Esporte Clube Pau Grande continues to operate and competes in the amateur championship of Liga Mageense de Desportos, keeping alive the memory of the place that revealed the great player.
