History
Esporte Clube São Bento was founded on August 15, 1914, in Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo, becoming one of the oldest clubs still active in the state. The name is a tribute to the neighborhood and the Benedictine monastery in the city. Throughout the twentieth century, the club alternated participations between divisions of the São Paulo State Championship, experiencing periods of oscillation between promotion and relegation. The conquest of the São Paulo State Championship Series A2 in 2016 returned the team to the state elite and paved the way for one of the best moments in its history. In 2017, São Bento competed in Serie B of the Brazilian Championship, remaining in the competition also in 2018. During this period, Walter Ribeiro stadium hosted matches against clubs with large fan bases, consolidating the club as Sorocaba's representative in national football. In the following years, the club faced financial and sporting difficulties, with successive relegations in the São Paulo scenario. Nevertheless, it maintains strong identification with the city and remains among the centenary clubs of Brazilian football.
