History

Founded on March 19, 1913 in the Passo d'Areia neighborhood in Porto Alegre, Sports Club São José emerged from the union of young people from the neighborhood and carries the nickname Zequinha. For decades it was a club with strong community identity in the state capital, coexisting with the hegemony of Grêmio and Internacional. The club built its trajectory in the lower divisions of Rio Grande do Sul football, alternating campaigns in the state elite with periods in the second division. Its stadium, in Passo d'Areia, was named after Francisco Novelletto Neto, a historic leader of Rio Grande do Sul football. São José is also known for its work in youth categories and women's football, an area in which the club became one of the state's references, developing athletes for national competitions. In the 21st century, Zequinha continued alternating participations in the Rio Grande do Sul State Championship and in national competitions of lower divisions, maintaining itself as one of the traditional clubs in the state capital outside the Gre-Nal rivalry.
