Club Sport Emelec

Emelec is one of the most popular and successful clubs in Ecuador, founded in 1929 in Guayaquil. With more than a dozen national titles and regular participation in the Copa Libertadores, it is one of the giants of South American football.

History

Founded in 1929 in the port city of Guayaquil, Club Sport Emelec emerged linked to the electrical company EMELEC (Empresa Eléctrica del Ecuador), from which it inherited both its name and the nickname 'El Bombillo' (The Light Bulb). The blue and black colors became synonymous with football in Guayaquil and Ecuador as a whole. Throughout the twentieth century, the club won successive titles of the Ecuadorian Serie A, establishing itself as the most successful club in Ecuadorian football alongside Barcelona Sporting Club. The classic between the two Guayaquil giants, known as 'Clásico del Astillero', is considered one of the most passionate confrontations in South American football. In the Copa Libertadores, Emelec represented Ecuador in several editions, reaching advanced stages and revealing players of continental quality. The George Capwell Stadium, with a capacity for over 30,000 fans, is one of the most traditional stadiums in South America. In the twenty-first century, the club maintained its hegemony in Ecuadorian football, winning consecutive national titles between 2013 and 2016.
