In 1959, the club made history by winning the Taça Brasil, defeating Pelé's Santos in the final, and became the first Brazilian champion. For this achievement, it competed in the 1960 Copa Libertadores, the tournament's first edition, as Brazil's representative. In the 1980s, Bahia was the Brazilian champion in 1988, defeating Internacional in the final. In the following years, the club experienced periods of sporting and financial instability, with spells in lower divisions of Brazilian football, until recovery from the 2010s onward.
