History
Esteghlal FC was founded in 1945 with the name Club Amjadiyeh, in the Iranian capital Tehran. In the following decades, the club adopted the name Taj (Crown), winning major titles in Iranian and Asian football. After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, it became known as Esteghlal, a word that in Persian and Arabic means 'independence'. The club plays its matches at the legendary Azadi Stadium, one of the largest in the world with a capacity of over 100,000 spectators. Esteghlal is one of the most successful teams in the Iranian Professional League, with numerous national titles throughout its history. The rivalry with Persepolis FC, known as the Tehran Derby, is considered one of the most passionate in Asian football, gathering crowds at the Azadi and paralyzing the country at each classic. In 1970, the club won the AFC Club Championship, becoming one of the first Asian teams to win a prestigious continental competition. Esteghlal has produced generations of Iranian players and contributed decisively to the development of football in the country. Its fan base is one of the largest in the Middle East, with passionate followers in all provinces of Iran.
