Exeter City
Exeter City is an English club from Devon, owned by its own supporters. It made its mark in Brazilian football history by being the first opponent of the Brazil national team, in 1914.
History
The club recognizes 1901 as its formation date, when it existed as St Sidwell's United. On 31 May 1904, it adopted the name Exeter City. Red and white colors were adopted in 1910. In 1914, Exeter toured South America. On 21 July, in Laranjeiras, Rio de Janeiro, it was defeated 2-0 by the Brazilian national team, becoming the first club to face them. Exeter was a founding member of the Third Division in 1920 and won the Fourth Division in 1989-90. In 2003, it was relegated from the Football League, and the Exeter City Supporters' Trust assumed the majority of the club's shares on 5 September of that year. In January 2005, the team drew 0-0 with Manchester United at Old Trafford, in the FA Cup, and lost the return match 2-0. The return to the Football League came in 2008, with a 1-0 victory over Cambridge United in the Conference play-off final. In 2022, the club secured promotion to League One.
