FC Arouca
FC Arouca is a Portuguese club from the city of Arouca, district of Aveiro, which competes in the Primeira Liga. After decades in district and regional championships, the club experienced rapid growth in the 2010s, culminating in unprecedented access to Portuguese football's elite.
History
Founded in 1971, FC Arouca spent most of its history competing in district and regional championships in Aveiro, without major national recognition. The institutional turnaround came in the early 2000s, when the club began investing in infrastructure, youth development, and professional management, gradually climbing the divisions of Portuguese football. The major milestone came in the 2020-21 season, when Arouca won the Segunda Liga title (Liga Portugal 2), securing for the first time in its history access to the Primeira Liga, the elite of national football. The achievement surprised Portuguese football circles, given the club's modest size compared to traditional rivals. Since their debut in the Primeira Liga in 2021-22, Arouca has established itself as a competitive club, known for an attacking style of play and the ability to develop and nurture young players, who are later sold to larger clubs in Portugal and abroad. The club plays its home matches at Arouca Municipal Stadium, with a capacity of just a few thousand spectators, one of the smallest stadiums in the Primeira Liga. Beyond men's football, Arouca also invested in youth categories, becoming a reference for training in the Aveiro region. The continued presence in the Portuguese elite, after years of instability between divisions, is seen as the club's greatest achievement.
