FC Carl Zeiss Jena
FC Carl Zeiss Jena is a German club from the city of Jena, in Thuringia. It was one of the main teams of East Germany, with three Oberliga titles and a Cup Winners' Cup final appearance in 1981.
History
The club was founded in 1903 in the city of Jena and, throughout the twentieth century, was linked to the Carl Zeiss optics company, which explains the name. In the former East Germany, Carl Zeiss Jena was Oberliga champion in 1962-63, 1967-68, and 1969-70. The club also won the East German Cup (FDGB-Pokal) in 1960, 1972, and 1974. The greatest European achievement came in the 1980-81 season, when the team reached the Cup Winners' Cup final and was defeated by Dynamo Tbilisi 2-1 in Düsseldorf. After German reunification, the club faced financial and sporting difficulties, but continues as a symbol of East German football and plays its home matches at the Ernst-Abbe-Sportfeld.
