History
Founded in 1948 following the merger of two city clubs, 1. FC Köln was one of the founding members of the Bundesliga in 1963 and became champions in the competition's first year. The club reached its golden age in the 1970s, winning two national titles and reaching the UEFA Cup semi-final. The legend Lukas Podolski, born in Cologne to a Polish family, is the club's greatest modern idol. Köln has alternated between Germany's first and second divisions in recent decades, but maintains its tremendous popularity.
