History

Flamengo Rowing Club, founded in 1895 as a rowing club, began competing in professional football in 1911. In the 1950s, with the inauguration of the Maracanã in 1950, the red-black team gained a stage worthy of its enormous fanbase. Between 1953 and 1955, under the technical direction of Paraguayan Fleitas Solich, Flamengo assembled one of the strongest teams in Brazilian football of the era. Dida, Evaristo de Macedo, and Zagallo were among the prominent names of the period. This cycle brought the club the three-peat championship of the Rio de Janeiro Championship, with titles in 1953, 1954, and 1955, the first consecutive three-peat in the club's history. The Rio de Janeiro Championship was then the main competition among Brazilian football clubs, in a period before the Brazilian Championship.
