History
Clube de Regatas do Flamengo was founded on November 15, 1895 as a rowing club, and created its football department in 1911. Already in the 1950s and 1960s it consolidated itself as the club with the largest fan base in Rio de Janeiro and one of the greatest forces in Brazilian football. In 1961, Flamengo won the Rio-São Paulo Tournament, a competition that pitted the main teams from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo against each other and had enormous prestige before the creation of the national Brazilian Championship. The squad of the time included midfielder Gérson, the Golden Left-footer, who would later be world champion with the Brazilian National Team in 1970, and striker Dida, one of the greatest goalscorers in Flamengo's history.
