Flamengo (1972-1974)
Squad of Flamengo that won the Carioca Championships of 1972 and 1974 and marked the transition to the generation that would dominate Brazilian football at the end of the decade. In 1974, Zico won his first professional title and Júnior made his debut for the club.
History
Clube de Regatas do Flamengo was founded on November 17, 1895, in Rio de Janeiro, as a rowing club, and began competing in football in 1911. In the early 1970s, the red-black team sought to recover its prominence in the Carioca Championship, after the titles of 1963 and 1965. Flamengo was Carioca champion in 1972, ending the gap in state titles since 1965. The matches were played mainly at Maracanã, venue for great red-black crowds. In 1974, the club won the Carioca Championship again. This was Zico's (Arthur Antunes Coimbra) first professional title, who had made his debut with the main squad in 1971. The year also marked Júnior's (Leovegildo Lins da Gama Júnior) debut in the professional level. The titles of 1972 and 1974 preceded the most successful phase in Flamengo's history, which would bring together Zico, Júnior and other names formed or revealed at the club and would culminate in the conquests from 1978 to 1983, such as the Copa Libertadores and the 1981 Club World Cup.
