Flamengo 1990

Flamengo 1990 was the champion of the second edition of the Copa do Brasil, defeating Goiás in the final. It was the club's first title in the competition, which Rubro-Negro would win again in 2006, 2013, 2022 and 2024.

History

Flamengo arrived at 1990 in a moment of transition. The generation led by Zico, champions of the Copa Libertadores and the Club World Cup in 1981, had already disbanded: Zico left the club in 1989, and the team was undergoing renovation. The Copa do Brasil, created in 1989 by the CBF, was played in a knockout format and had the great appeal of giving the champion a place in the Copa Libertadores. The first edition was won by Grêmio, and Flamengo entered the second edition as one of the favorites due to the weight of the shirt. The Rubro-Negro team advanced through the elimination stages until the final, in which it met Goiás, which was having a historic campaign for a club from the Midwest. Flamengo prevailed and secured the 1990 title, the first in its history in the Copa do Brasil. Players such as Júnior and Zinho were part of the squad of that era. The 1990 trophy opened a series of conquests for the club in the tournament, which continued in 2006, 2013, 2022 and 2024. For supporters, the campaign is remembered as the conquest that put Flamengo back on the map of national titles after the end of the Zico era.
