Flamengo 1999-2001
Flamengo in the early 2000s was a three-time Rio de Janeiro state champion in 1999, 2000 and 2001 and also won the Champions Cup in 2001. The period was marked by Petkovic's free kick goal in the 2001 Rio de Janeiro Championship final against Vasco.
History
Between 1999 and 2001, Flamengo achieved a rare sequence of victories in the Rio de Janeiro State Championship, winning three consecutive editions at a time when the classic rivalry against Vasco dominated the state calendar. The most memorable moment of the three consecutive titles is the 2001 final, when Serbian midfielder Dejan Petkovic scored a free kick goal in the final minutes, a moment that became known as Pet's Goal and secured the title against Vasco. In the same year of 2001, the club won the Copa dos Campeões, a CBF tournament contested by regional champions and the winners of the Copa do Nordeste, Copa Norte and other competitions on the calendar, with Paysandu as the opponent in the final. The period preceded the club's sports reconstruction in the following years and remains as a reference for a generation that dominated the state championship and achieved a major national title at the beginning of the century.
