Flamengo 2017
Flamengo's squad in the 2017 season, marked by two lost finals in the Brazilian Cup and the South American Cup, and by the professional debut of Vinícius Júnior. The team finished the Brazilian Championship in sixth place.
History
Flamengo arrived at 2017 after finishing the 2016 Brazilian Championship in third place with the goal of returning to compete for national and continental titles. The team had as leaders the midfielder Diego and the midfielder Everton Ribeiro, and counted on young players developed in the academy, such as Lucas Paquetá. In the Brazilian Cup, Flamengo reached the final and faced Cruzeiro. The title went to the team from Minas Gerais, which won the decision on penalties and became champions of the competition in 2017. In the South American Cup, Flamengo also advanced to the final and was defeated by Independiente from Argentina, which won the trophy. It was the club's second lost final in the same season. In the Brazilian Championship, Flamengo finished in sixth place, behind Corinthians, Palmeiras, Santos, Grêmio and Cruzeiro, which guaranteed them a place in the 2018 Copa Libertadores. In May 2017, at the age of 16, Vinícius Júnior made his professional debut with the team, a move that preceded his transfer to Real Madrid.
