Flamengo 2019
Flamengo 2019, coached by Portuguese Jorge Jesus, won the Copa Libertadores and the Brazilian Championship in the same year. The team impressed with offensive football, high pressing and Gabigol's goals.
History
Flamengo 2019 was born from a strong investment in reinforcements and the arrival of Portuguese coach Jorge Jesus in June of that year, coming from Al-Hilal. The squad brought together names like Gabigol, Arrascaeta, Everton Ribeiro, Gerson, Filipe Luís and Rodrigo Caio, who fit into an offensive style of play, with advanced lines and pressure after losing the ball. The most striking achievement was the Copa Libertadores, won on November 23, 2019, in Lima, Peru. In the final against River Plate, Flamengo lost 1-0 until the 89th minute and turned the game around with two goals from Gabigol, winning 2-1. It was the club's second title in the competition, 38 years after the first, in 1981. Gabigol finished as the top scorer of the Libertadores. In the Brazilian Championship, Flamengo won the title with 90 points, in a campaign of great consistency and many goals. The team also reached the final of the FIFA Club World Cup in Doha, and lost to Liverpool 1-0 in extra time. In 2020, the team also won the Brazil Super Cup and the South American Recopa. Jorge Jesus left the club in July of that year to coach Benfica, ending one of the most successful cycles in Flamengo's recent history.
