History
Flamengo 2021 opened the year with the squad that dominated Brazilian football between 2019 and 2020, still under the command of Rogério Ceni. In the first months of the season, the team won the Campeonato Carioca and the Brazilian Super Cup, reinforcing the club's recent hegemony. In the middle of the year, the board changed the technical command: Ceni left the club and Renato Gaúcho took over the team. With him, the team continued strong in the Copa Libertadores and fought for the Campeonato Brasileiro title, with Gabigol, Arrascaeta and Everton Ribeiro as main attacking players. The continental campaign ended in the final, played in Montevideo, Uruguay, against Palmeiras. Flamengo tied the match with a goal by Gabigol, but lost 2-1 in extra time, with a goal by Deyverson. In the Campeonato Brasileiro, the club finished in second place, behind Atlético Mineiro. The 2021 season was marked by the double runner-up finish, in the Copa Libertadores and Campeonato Brasileiro, and is remembered as the last great year of the victorious cycle that began in 2019.
