Fluminense 1908-1909

Fluminense from 1908-1909 was two-time Carioca champion in those years, establishing itself as one of the powerhouses of football in Rio de Janeiro in the early years of the sport in Brazil.

History

Fluminense Football Club was founded on July 21, 1902, in Rio de Janeiro, through the initiative of Oscar Cox, who had learned football in Switzerland and brought it to Brazil. The club was born connected to Rio's elite and early on had the neighborhood of Laranjeiras as its headquarters. In the early Carioca championships, Fluminense formed one of the city's strongest teams and won the 1906 title, the first in the competition. In 1908 and 1909, the club won the Carioca Championship again, forming a two-time championship that intensified the rivalry with Botafogo, América, and other clubs that competed for the hegemony of Carioca football. Laranjeiras Stadium, which the club had been using since the early years of the twentieth century, became one of the most important venues in Brazilian football of that era.
