Fluminense 1973 was the tricolor team that won the Carioca Championship that year, keeping the squad among the great forces of football in Rio de Janeiro in the early 1970s.

History

Fluminense Football Club was founded on July 21, 1902, in the Laranjeiras neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, by Oscar Cox. It is one of the most traditional clubs in Brazilian football and has the Maracanã as the main venue for its major matches. In the early 1970s, the club went through a phase of state championships. Among them is the 1973 Carioca Championship, which adds to the victories of 1969 and 1971 and precedes the titles of 1975 and 1976, won by the so-called Tricolor Machine. The 1973 title reinforced Fluminense's position in the regional dispute with Flamengo, Vasco da Gama and Botafogo, the great rivals of Rio de Janeiro. The state championship had enormous sports and popular significance at that time.
