History
Fluminense Football Club was founded on July 21, 1902, in Rio de Janeiro, and has had the Maracanã as its main home since the 1950s. In the early 1980s the club assembled a competitive squad, which began to compete for national and state titles. In 1984, under the command of Carlos Alberto Parreira, the team consolidated itself around players such as goalkeeper Paulo Victor, defender Ricardo Gomes, fullback Branco, Paraguayan Romerito and the attacking duo formed by Assis and Washington. The squad was pointed out as one of the most balanced in Brazilian football in that season. In the 1984 Brazilian Championship final, Fluminense surpassed Vasco and claimed the national title. In the same period the club also won the Rio de Janeiro Championship in 1984 and 1985, which helped establish the team's image as one of the main teams of the decade.
