History
Fluminense Football Club was founded in 1902, in Rio de Janeiro, and is one of the most traditional clubs in Brazil. In 2007, the team won the Copa do Brasil by defeating Figueirense in the final, which guaranteed a place in the 2008 Libertadores. Under the command of coach Renato Gaúcho, the tricolor team had a historic campaign in the continental tournament and reached the final, something the club had never achieved before. Players such as Thiago Neves, Thiago Silva and Washington were among the highlights of that squad. The final was against LDU Quito, from Ecuador. In the first leg, LDU won 4-2, in Quito. In the second leg, at Maracanã, Fluminense won 3-1, which took the decision to penalties, won by LDU 3-1. Despite the defeat, the 2008 campaign is considered one of the great moments in Fluminense's recent history and helped consolidate the club among the protagonists of South American football in that period.
