History

The 2022 season started with Abel Braga in charge. Fluminense was eliminated from the Copa Libertadores in the preliminary phase, on penalties, by Olimpia, but recovered in the Carioca Championship. In the Carioca final, Tricolor defeated Flamengo 2-0 in the first leg and drew 1-1 in the return leg, securing the state title. Shortly after, Abel Braga left the club and Fernando Diniz was hired. With Diniz, the team adopted a possession-based style of play and close connection between players, which drew attention across the country. Fluminense reached the Copa do Brasil semi-finals, where they were eliminated by Corinthians, and finished the Brazilian Championship in third place, with direct qualification for the 2023 Copa Libertadores. Argentine forward Germán Cano was the top scorer of the 2022 Brazilian Championship, with 26 goals. The season also marked the farewell of striker Fred, who ended his career in July 2022. This was the foundation that, the following year, won the club's first Copa Libertadores title in history.
