History

Fluminense, founded in 1902, entered the 2025 season with a guaranteed spot in the Club World Cup following the conquest of the 2023 Copa Libertadores, the club's first championship, achieved at the Maracanã against Boca Juniors. The team counted on experienced veterans, such as center-back Thiago Silva and goalkeeper Fábio, in addition to Argentine striker Germán Cano. At the Club World Cup, in the United States, Fluminense was placed in Group F, with Borussia Dortmund, Ulsan HD, and Mamelodi Sundowns, and advanced in second place, behind the German club. The team was under the command of Renato Gaúcho. In the Round of 16, Tricolor defeated Inter Milan 2-0, with goals from Germán Cano and Hércules. In the quarterfinals, they beat Al Hilal, from Saudi Arabia, 2-1, with goals from Martinelli and Kauã Elias. The campaign ended in the semifinal, when Chelsea won 2-0, with two goals from João Pedro, a former Fluminense player. It was the best performance by a Brazilian club in that tournament.
