Fluminense Women
Women's football department of Fluminense Football Club, officially resumed in 2023 after decades of inactivity. It competes in state and national competitions representing one of the most traditional clubs in Rio de Janeiro football.
History
Fluminense's women's football has roots dating back to the late 1960s, in a period when the practice of sports by women was officially prohibited in Brazil by federal decree, which limited the development of the sport at the club for many years. With the ban revoked in 1979 and the gradual growth of women's football in the country in the following decades, Fluminense maintained the department intermittently, without the professional structure offered to men's teams. In 2023, following the professionalization movement of Brazilian women's football driven by CBF requirements and the commercial growth of the sport, the Laranjeiras club formally reactivated its women's team, with the goal of competing in the Rio de Janeiro State Championship and national access competitions. Since its resumption, the team has invested in youth development and the recruitment of athletes with experience from other national women's football clubs, seeking to consolidate its presence in the divisions of Brazilian women's football.
