Fortuna Sittard

Fortuna Sittard

Fortuna Sittard is a Dutch club from the city of Sittard, in Limburg, formed on July 1, 1968, by the merger of the clubs Fortuna 54 and Sittardia. It is one of the few representatives from Limburg in professional football in the Netherlands, alongside Roda JC.

History

The club's history dates back to Fortuna 54, a team that won the Dutch Cup (KNVB Cup) in 1956-57 and again in 1963-64, as well as finishing as runner-up in the Eredivisie behind Ajax. In 1968, Fortuna 54 merged with Sittardia to form Fortuna Sittard, uniting the city's football traditions. As Fortuna Sittard, the club reached two finals of the Dutch Cup, in 1983-84 (defeat to Feyenoord) and 1998-99, but failed to lift the trophy in its current format. Throughout its history, the club alternated seasons in the Eredivisie and Eerste Divisie, maintaining a strong connection with the local supporters, known as the Fortunezen. Currently based at the Fortuna Sittard Stadion, with capacity for approximately 12,500 supporters, the club remains one of the few representatives of the Limburg region in Dutch professional football.
