History

Founded in 1923 in the capital Ankara, Gençlerbirliği is one of Turkey's oldest and most traditional clubs, having been one of the founders of the Turkish professional league in 1959. The club had its competitive peak between the 1990s and 2000s, when it regularly competed in European competitions and formed one of Ankara's strongest rivalries with Ankaragücü. Despite fluctuating between the first and second divisions in recent years, Gençlerbirliği maintains a relevant history in developing players for the Turkish national team and remains a reference in the capital's football.
