History

Founded in 1887, Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata is one of the oldest clubs in Argentina, with a strong tradition in multiple sports besides football. The club has historically competed in the Argentine first division, with spells also in the second category. Known for its rivalry with Estudiantes de La Plata, the so-called Platense classic is one of the most traditional derbies in Argentine football. The club gained further international notoriety by being coached by Diego Maradona between 2019 and 2020.
