Goiânia Esporte Clube

Goiânia Esporte Clube

Goiânia Esporte Clube is one of the most traditional clubs in Goiás football, founded in 1938 in the Campininha neighborhood in Goiânia. It dominated the state's football in the early decades of the Campeonato Goiano and is part of the historic group of major clubs in Goiás.

History

Goiânia Esporte Clube was born in 1938, just a few years after the founding of the city of Goiânia itself, in the traditional Campininha neighborhood — the origin of the nickname Galo da Campininha. The club quickly established itself as one of the main forces in the state's football. In the early decades of the Campeonato Goiano, Goiânia was the great state dominator, accumulating achievements in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s, and building historic rivalries with Atlético Goianiense, Vila Nova, and later with Goiás. In total, the club has 14 titles in the Campeonato Goiano, a number that for many years kept it among the state's greatest champions. Galo da Campininha is part of the historic quartet of Goiás football, alongside Goiás, Vila Nova, and Atlético Goianiense. As the decades passed, the club lost ground to its rivals and began to alternate between elite and lower divisions of Goiás football, but remains active and preserves great historical importance for sports in Central-West Brazil.
