Goiás 2010

Goiás in 2010 lived one of the most contradictory seasons in Brazilian football. The team reached the final of the Copa Sudamericana against Independiente, from Argentina, and in the same year was relegated in the Brazilian Championship.

History

Goiás Esporte Clube was founded in 1943, in Goiânia, and established itself as the most prominent club in the Center-West region. In 2010, the Esmeraldino wrote a remarkable chapter in its international history. In the 2010 Copa Sudamericana, Goiás advanced phase by phase and eliminated Palmeiras in the semifinal. It was the club's first continental final in its history. In the decision against Independiente, Goiás won the first leg in Goiânia 2-0 and lost the second leg in Avellaneda. With the tie on the aggregate score, the title was decided on penalties, and the Argentine club prevailed. Striker Rafael Moura was the competition's top scorer. In the Brazilian Championship, the team could not repeat the performance and finished the year relegated to Serie B. The 2010 campaign was marked as the year in which Goiás came close to a continental title and, at the same time, fell out of division.
