Gornik Zabrze

Gornik Zabrze

Gornik Zabrze is one of the most traditional and successful clubs in Polish football, based in the city of Zabrze, in Silesia.

History

Founded in 1948 in the coal mining region of Silesia, Gornik Zabrze quickly became a powerhouse of Polish football, being the country's most popular club during the 1960s and 1970s. The club's peak came with multiple national titles and reaching the 1970 European Cup Winners' Cup final, when it was defeated by Manchester City. Gornik provided several players to the Polish national team, including key figures in World Cup campaigns. After a period of financial instability in the following decades, the club maintained its loyal fan base and returned to compete in the Ekstraklasa, Polish football's top division, seeking to recover its historical prominence in national football.
