Grêmio 1977
The 1977 Grêmio was Gaucho champion and interrupted the sequence of eight consecutive titles by Internacional in the Gaucho Championship, from 1969 to 1976.
History
Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense was founded on September 15, 1903, in Porto Alegre, and built its identity from the rivalry with Internacional, the so-called Grenal. The Monumental Olympic Stadium was inaugurated in 1954 and was the club's home for decades. Between 1969 and 1976, Internacional won eight consecutive editions of the Gaucho Championship, which kept Grêmio away from the state title during this entire period. In 1977, Grêmio won the Gaucho Championship and ended this sequence. The achievement is remembered as the club's comeback in the state rivalry and as the starting point for the following decades, when Grêmio began to compete for national and international titles.
