Grêmio 1981
Grêmio's squad that won the 1981 Brazilian Championship, the club's first national title in history, under the command of coach Ênio Andrade.
History
Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense, founded on September 15, 1903, arrived at 1981 as one of the main forces of Rio Grande do Sul football, but still without a national title. In that season, the team coached by Ênio Andrade put together a solid squad, with Leão in goal, Paulo Isidoro in midfield, and Baltazar in attack. The 1981 Brazilian Championship ended with Grêmio as champions after defeating São Paulo in the final. The achievement gave the club its first Brazilian title and qualified it to compete in the 1982 Copa Libertadores. The 1981 team is seen as the foundation of the generation that, two years later, won the Copa Libertadores and the 1983 Intercontinental Cup. The 1981 title consolidated Grêmio as a club of national prominence and opened the most successful phase of its history up to that point.
