History

Grêmio Foot-Ball Porto Alegrense was founded on September 15, 1903 and arrived at the 1980s with the ambition to conquer South America. In 1983, under the command of Valdir Espinosa, the team brought together names such as Mazarópi, Hugo de León, Paulo César, China, Osvaldo, Paulo Isidoro, Tarciso, Caio, César and Renato Gaúcho. In the 1983 Copa Libertadores, Grêmio reached the final against Peñarol, from Uruguay. They drew 1-1 in Montevideo and won 2-1 at the Olímpico, in Porto Alegre, with goals from César and Caio, winning the continental title for the first time. On December 11, 1983, in Tokyo, Grêmio faced Hamburgo, from Germany, in the final of the Intercontinental Cup. The match was decided in extra time: Grêmio won 2-1, with both goals scored by Renato Gaúcho, and became world champion. The 1983 campaign is considered one of the landmarks in the history of the club and Rio Grande do Sul football, and served as a reference for the Tricolor's subsequent international achievements.
