History
The Copa do Brasil was born in 1989 as an elimination tournament that brought together clubs from across the country, with the participation of state champions and runners-up. It was a competition designed to bring teams from different regions closer together. Grêmio reached the final against Sport and won the title, becoming the first champion in the competition's history. The trophy gave the gaucho club a spot in the following Copa Libertadores, a benefit granted to the Copa do Brasil champion. The 1989 title opened a strong relationship between Grêmio and the tournament. The club would go on to be the Copa do Brasil champion again in 1994, 1997, 2001 and 2016, and became one of the competition's greatest winners.
