Grêmio 1994

Grêmio's 1994 squad was led by Luiz Felipe Scolari and won the Brazilian Cup that year. The title guaranteed a spot in the 1995 Copa Libertadores, which the club won shortly after.

History

Founded in 1903 in Porto Alegre, Grêmio reached 1994 as one of the most traditional clubs in Rio Grande do Sul. Its first national title had been the Brazilian Cup in 1989, and the team sought to reaffirm itself on the national stage. Under the command of Luiz Felipe Scolari, the 1994 squad became known for its defensive organization, strong marking, and competitive strength in knockout matches. This profile combined well with the Brazilian Cup format, which was played in two-leg elimination matches. That year, Grêmio became Brazilian Cup champions, defeating Ceará in the final. It was the club's second title in the competition, after the one in 1989. The title came with an immediate reward: the Brazilian Cup champion earned a place in the following year's Copa Libertadores. In 1995, Grêmio conquered South America, and the 1994 squad is remembered as the starting point of this victorious phase, which also included the South American Recopa and the Brazilian Championship in 1996.
